Wrightsville fantasy author releases new book

Jessica Eppley has been writing books for several years now. Yet, the Wrightsville author who recently published her fourth book has not settled on a routine for writing.

siavoncover3“Usually an idea will just hit me, and I will write down some notes about the idea to fiddle with later,” Eppley said in an email interview. “Sometimes I outline a couple of chapters ahead from where I am so I have an ending point. I once in a while create character profiles for new characters so I can map their personalities out before I actually create them.”

The third book in her “The Book of Siavon” series is titled “The Blood Moon.” The first in the series, “The Ruby Child,” came out in 2011; the second, “The Tail of Murias,” came out in 2013.

“I’ve loved writing as long as I can remember,” Eppley said. “When I was a kid, I used to write pretend novels and comics all the time. When I came up with ‘The Book of Siavon,’ I had been playing around with other genres for a long time that didn’t quite sit well with me, and then one day, I decided to try fantasy, and the story just poured out of me.”

Eppley’s book continues the story of Keavy, a 17-year-old girl with ruby eyes. She was tasked with restoring peace to a land called Aryth in the first book in the series and defeating a vengeful mermaid in the second. In the third book, her ship crashes on the shores of a place called Elgeron, and she must figure out how to drive away the eternal darkness from a spell cast by an evil vampire. In the meantime, Rovir Foxcott, the religious leader of one of the last standing groups of people, is bitten by a werewolf and faces his impending transformation.

Eppley said she tries to make her characters original so they do not adhere to one archetype.

“Keavy, the main protagonist of ‘The Book of Siavon,’ definitely has a little bit of me in her, though I made her much braver and smarter than I. I believe all of my characters have some element of my own personality in them, but I took some liberties as well,” Eppley said.

Eppley decided to use CreateSpace to self-publish and distribute her first novels, and she decided to do the same with “The Blood Moon.”

“A successful author acquaintance of mine actually told me CreateSpace was the way to go. He said he’d wished he’d done it that way years ago,” Eppley said.

Eppley’s parents, Deb and Rick, are very supportive of her writing.

“My entire family is very supportive, especially my parents. I am always getting asked about my next book from relatives as well,” Eppley said.

Eppley draws inspiration from her favorite authors, Stephen King and Michael Crichton.
“I am inspired by female writers as well, such as J.K. Rowling and Carrie Vaughn,” she said.

As advice to other writers, Eppley said, “Do not give up. The point of writing isn’t necessarily to make money, it’s to tell a story. Whether your story hits home for one person or one million, you should consider yourself successful.”
